Why is fresh air important?
Fresh air is important for our health. Did you know that indoor air is up to five times more polluted than outdoor air? We don't talk about "getting some fresh air" for nothing; we need plenty of fresh air. We help you make sure there is enough fresh air, in the home, office, school, cafe or gym. With our advice and tips, you can get some fresh air indoors too!
Why do you need fresh air?
At home, at school, at work. We spend 90 percent of our time inside four walls. Yet the air quality inside is often unhealthy. Healthy air is the basis for proper functioning. When indoor CO2 levels, humidity and temperature do not meet the required standards, the indoor environment becomes unhealthy. If there is too little ventilation, you can suffer from, among other things:
- Headache
- Tightness
- Dizziness
- Feeling drowsy
- Dry throat, nose and eyes
Therefore, always make sure you have enough fresh air inside. At the bottom of this blog we give you 3 tips for a healthy indoor environment.
How do you provide fresh air in your home?
By ventilating regularly and properly, you provide fresh air. It is important that some outside air constantly enters each room. Fresh outside air replaces polluted inside air; this is called ventilation. It is best to ventilate 24 hours a day. Airing is done by opening windows or doors so that extra fresh air comes in briefly. It is a misconception that airing works as well as ventilating, it does not. Airing is for a short time, ventilating should always be done. In some situations extra ventilation is needed. For example while cooking, showering, sleeping and when there are many people in one room. Ventilation can of course be done through windows, doors, gaps, ventilation grids and through a mechanical ventilation system. Want to know more about ventilation? Then click here.

Fresh air is fourth basic rule
Proper ventilation has become the fourth basic rule in dealing with Coronavirus. In addition to hand washing, keeping 1.5 meters away and staying home in case of symptoms, a new important basic rule has been added - ventilation. Proper ventilation was already considered important, but is now one of the most important conditions for controlling COVID-19. The rule applies to ventilation at home, school, work, gym, restaurant, etc. So ventilate anytime, anywhere. A CO2 monitor helps to understand the indoor climate and whether ventilation is adequate. In our blog you can read more about how a CO2 meter works.
3 Essential tips for a healthy indoor environment
To be sure of a healthy indoor environment indoors, we have listed some indispensable tips for you.
TIP 1: WINDOWS OPEN
Open as many windows and doors (facing each other) as possible. This provides an airflow of fresh air and thus low CO2 levels. The higher the CO2 level, the worse the air exchange is. The CO2 level indicates the degree to which the room is saturated with the air exhaled by humans and therefore possibly with virus particles.
TIP 2: VENTILATE MECHANICALLY
Windows and doors cannot always be opened, for example in bad weather, lots of outside noise or in museums. It is important to have a ventilation system that can be on 24/7 so that there is always good ventilation. Preferably a ventilation system that works on CO2 and thus automatically ventilates more when needed. A good ventilation system also eliminates the need to open windows and doors, although this is recommended for additional air exchange. If there is no ventilation system in place, it is more likely that CO2 levels are regularly too high.
TIP 3: INSTALL A CO2 METER
For a safe indoor environment in a home, restaurant, gym, etc., we strongly recommend installing a CO2 meter to monitor whether there is enough fresh air.
Place the CO2 monitor in a visible location, preferably with a traffic light function. A green, orange or red light illuminates to indicate air quality. This way you can immediately see if the air inside is healthy enough to stay in. With an orange light the CO2 value exceeds 800 ppm, keep this as a sign to ventilate more, so the light turns green again. From 1200 ppm the red light comes on, you should avoid this because from this value the indoor air is too bad. The EnviSense CO2 meter also has an audible alarm that you can set yourself.
