Installation of mechanical ventilation and mounting tips
In this knowledge article, we take you through the do's and don'ts when installing a mechanical fan yourself. Of course, many of these tips you can also apply when connecting other, similar, fans.
Can I install a mechanical fan myself?
Yes, this is possible. We supply an installation manual with every mechanical fan to make it as easy as possible for you. If you purchase a fan, we advise you to take a perilex plug into account. You can read more about this below.
Mounting position of a mechanical fan
A mechanical fan (MV) has the great advantage that you can mount it in different positions. This can be placed against the ceiling, wall, sloping wall and even on the ground. These positions give you great flexibility in mounting.
When installing, always take into account the fan's discharge channel. Every mechanical fan always has one outlet. The fan box is often mounted with the air discharge to the outside. If you are dependent on the size of the room, take a look at the flat Ducobox Silent or Orcon Compact.
For your information
When a mechanical ventilation is purchased, two connections are always either not fitted with a cover or not sealed. The reason is that there must be one outlet opening and one intake opening at all times.
The electrical connections on a mechanical fan
Every mechanical fan comes with a plug. There are three different plug versions for a mechanical fan, namely;
Perilex plug
A perilex plug has five connections, subdivided into:
- 1x Phase wire (tension wire, brown in colour
- 2x Switching wires (black/grey colour)
- 1x Neutral wire (blue colour)
- 1x Ground wire (yellow/green colour)
These connections enable you to use a fixed and wired three-position switch to set the fan box to position 1, 2 and 3 respectively. There should therefore always be a direct wired connection between the fixed three-position switch and the perilex socket into which the perilex plug is inserted.
Peripheral plug
A plug with three connections, namely; 1x Phase wire, 1x Zero wire and 1x Grounded wire. This version is one of the most common and can only be operated with a wireless RF control.
Euro plug
A plug with two connections, namely 1x Phase wire and 1x Zero wire. For example, Itho Daalderop supplies its mechanical ventilation with a euro plug. The reason this does not require an earth to be fitted is that these systems are double insulated. Also this fan can only be operated with a wireless RF control.
Tip
A mechanical ventilation with perilex plug and equipped with a radio receiver has the option of being operated with both the fixed three-position switch and a radio control. Often, the latter signal is leading.

Application of silencers
The installation of silencers at an MV is very common and recommended. The most commonly used silencers are flexible silencers of diameter 127 mm or the acoustically insulated ventilation hose, available in 1 metre, 5 metres and 10 metres. These silencers dampen the sound of air movement directly from the fan and the resonance of the ventilation system itself. If you have the possibility, we always recommend a minimum length of 1 metre per connection. Would you like to further attenuate the noise at the valve itself? Then also use the Inno dampers.

Conclusion and tips
- A mechanical fan is self-installing
- Use our installation videos and product specifications
- Decide on Perilex or Peripheral/Euro plug connection before purchase
- For your safety, the power should be switched off when electrically connected
- When replacing Perilex, the existing wall socket may need to be adapted
