Ventilation in schools
Fresh air in schools is necessary for students and teachers. All rooms in the school therefore need good ventilation. Unhealthy air can cause students in the classroom to:
- Concentrate worse;
- Perform worse;
- Start to feel drowsy.
With proper ventilation, the above is not only prevented, but the risk of spreading viruses is also reduced. This creates a healthy indoor climate at school. Contact us for advice, order directly or request a quote.
Categories of school ventilation
How do you ensure good school ventilation?
Enough oxygen and clean air in the classroom is most important. You can achieve this through natural or mechanical ventilation. Natural ventilation takes place through open windows or doors and through ventilation grids. Mechanical ventilation takes place with the help of a ventilation system or a WTW unit (heat recovery unit). Sufficient ventilation must take place not only in the classroom, but also in other public spaces at school such as the auditorium, toilets and gymnasium.
Ventilation requirements for school buildings
According to the BB 101 there should be adequate ventilation provided for everyone in the building. Mechanical systems must adhere to a daily average of 1,000ppm CO2. Natural ventilation systems must not exceed a daily average of 1,500ppm CO2. We recommend an air exchange rate of 40-50 m³/hr per room.
Measuring air quality in the classroom
A CO2 monitor at school provides insight into the air quality by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide. This is expressed in PPM (parts per million). It is necessary to improve ventilation immediately when PPM is 1000 or higher. This can be done by opening windows and doors or by placing an air purifier in the classroom . An air cleaner in combination with ventilation also removes the most minute air particles, the aerosols, from the air.
Healthy indoor climate in schools
Good air quality in schools is important so that students, as well as teachers, can concentrate better, do not feel drowsy and can perform better. From 1,400 PPM, the ability to think and concentrate is affected. The chance of contamination with viruses is also reduced by good ventilation. At a PPM of 1,200, the chance of spreading a virus is already very high. By ventilating in the right way, the CO2 concentration in the air is reduced. Ventilation is not only important during a virus wave, but also for general health and well-being.
Ventilating in elementary school
Ventilation is also very important in elementary school. This is because young children can carry many viruses and easily pass them on to each other. Effective ventilation reduces the risk of spreading viruses. In addition, awareness and understanding among children about ventilation is also important.
Order school ventilation with a business account
We want to offer our business customers the possibility to order professionally. Register as a business customer and take advantage of special conditions and even more benefits, such as the ability to order by invoice. Of course it is also possible to order without a business account. For information and registration, see the page Business ordering on account.
Frequently asked questions about school ventilation
Ventilating in a school can be done naturally such as through open windows, doors and grills or mechanically using a ventilation system. If you are not sure whether there is enough ventilation, a CO2 monitor makes it easy to measure the air quality in the classroom. You can intervene immediately when the air quality drops, by ventilating naturally or mechanically.
Schools must meet the ventilation requirements of BB101. We also recommend a minimum air exchange rate of 40 m³/hour or preferably 50 m³/hour, as it concerns children in growth. Polluted air can have a negative effect on school performance.
A ventilation system can be placed in a centralized or decentralized manner. With centralized ventilation, each classroom is supplied with fresh air by means of a large air handling unit. In a decentralized way, each classroom gets its own fan and each classroom is ventilated separately with a WTW unit, such as the Orcon WTU.
