A horizontal duct damper, or a horizontal backdraft damper, is used to prevent air from flowing in the wrong direction through the duct when the fan is not in operation. Air can only flow in one direction, as the dampers close when air flows in the wrong direction. This way, you prevent dirty, exhausted air from ever flowing back into the ventilated space.
Installing a horizontal backdraft damper is very important in situations where heavily polluted air is being exhausted, such as in industrial applications. In such cases, you want to avoid at all costs that this air flows back and is inhaled.
