Which health complaints do I get as a result of poor ventilation?
The lack of fresh air in a room is very unhealthy. Among other things, it leads to physical complaints that are very quickly noticeable. This blog lists the complaints caused by poor ventilation and gives tips on how to prevent them.
Complaints due to unhealthy air in the home
Poor ventilation involves too high CO2 and/or (too low) humidity levels. Do you notice complaints coming up after spending a long time in a (closed) room? Do the following questions ever occur to you?
- What's the best thing to do about headaches at work?
- What to do about dry sore eyes?
- What to do against feeling dull?
- What to do if my child has concentration problems while studying?
- Why do I get dry hands in winter?
- Why does my hair get static in winter?
- Why do I always get electric shocks when I touch something or someone?
- Why do my lips tear?
- What do you do for a dry throat?
Then chances are it is due to poor or no ventilation. In this blog, you can read exactly which CO2 level corresponds to which complaints. Good ventilation is necessary for your health. You may not be able to see it, but you will notice it from the above complaints. You will see that good ventilation relieves or even eliminates many of these complaints.
How can you ventilate properly?
Want to make sure CO2 levels are healthy in the rooms you are in? Then buy a CO2 meter. The CO2 meter will alert you when it's time to let in fresh air. The EnviSense CO2 meter measures not only CO2 but also humidity in a room. An ideal humidity level is between 40 and 60%. If it goes beyond that, it can cause mould in the house and health problems or other discomforts such as dry skin. Is the humidity in your home too low? Then use our humidifiers. Is it too high? Then check out our ventilation systems or bathroom fans with humidity sensor.
Apart from the complaints poor ventilation causes, there are more reasons why good ventilation is important.
Ventilate against moisture and mould
In a poorly ventilated home, moisture cannot get out easily. The moisture accumulates in the house by condensing against your walls, ceiling, furniture, etc. and leads to (invisible) mould spots. Too high or too low humidity and mould are not only bad for your home, but also for your own health. It can lead to respiratory problems and allergies. This problem is especially prevalent in the colder months when we spend a lot of time at home, with the windows closed and the heating on. Especially with autumn and winter approaching, it is important to purchase good ventilation immediately. Prevent damage to your home and to your own health.
Prevent sick leave through ventilation
Poor ventilation causes health problems, and hence absenteeism. A CO2 concentration higher than 1000 ppm increases sick leave by 10% to 20%. It is estimated that a poor indoor climate costs an average European half a year of healthy life. Among the causes of this poor indoor climate are moisture and mould, furniture and textiles, electrical appliances, cleaning products and building materials. If you want to rid your indoor air of bacteria, micro-organisms, dust, pollen, etc., an air purifier is the solution for you!
Note: this is not a substitute for proper ventilation. This is because an air purifier does not supply oxygen.
Tips to improve your ventilation
TIP 1: Make sure enough fresh air can enter your home. This can be done through mechanical ventilation or a heat recovery system.
TIP 2: Measuring is knowing! Therefore, measure the air quality with a CO2 meter.
TIP 3: Once you have purchased a ventilation system, you must ensure that it is well maintained. If you don't do this, it will again cause health complaints.
