What are the filters for ventilation systems?
Filters are essential for a properly functioning ventilation system. They play an important role in maintaining air quality and maintaining system performance. There are different types of filters available, which vary in price and frequency of replacement. Which ones they are and exactly how these filters work, you can read in this blog. We will also tell you more about replacing and cleaning ventilation filters, such as for WTW units.
Why is a filter an important part of a ventilation system?
The air we breathe contains all kinds of impurities, such as dust particles and pollen. Some of these substances can be harmful to our health and cause allergic reactions, such as hay fever and asthma. Ventilation filters can be used to filter much of these impurities from the air, minimising their concentration. In addition, filters are essential to prevent the mechanical parts of the system and air ducts from becoming dirty. This is because if the air ducts are dirty, mould and bacteria can easily multiply. Filters therefore play an important role in limiting this contamination.
What filters are there for MVHR units?
There are different types of filters that can be used for heat recovery (HEW) units. These can be divided into filter classes. The most common filters are:
- G4 filters. These are standard filters that filter larger particles such as dust and pollen from the air.
- F7 filters. These are higher quality filters that filter finer particles such as smoke, bacteria and viruses out of the air.
- HEPA filters. These are very high-quality filters that filter almost all particles from the air, including very fine particles such as mould spores, fine dust and allergens.
New regulations for MVHR filters since 2018: ISO16890
- ISO Coarse - percentage of coarse dust retained by the filter.
- ISO ePM1 - percentage of fine dust (<1) retained by the filter.
- ISO ePM2.5 - percentage of fine dust (<2.5) retained by the filter.
- ISO ePM10 - percentage of fine dust (<10) retained by the filter.
How can I easily compare the old and new standards in terms of MVHR filters?
With MVHR filters, sometimes the old regulations are still used, so it can be useful to compare the old and new classifications. To give a better idea of the different filter classifications, we have compiled the table below, which contrasts the two terms. Note: this table is an estimate and exact values may vary slightly.

When should I replace a ventilation filter?
How often you should change the filters of a ventilation system depends on several factors, such as the level of air pollution, the type of filter and whether you suffer from allergies. For example, if you live in a busy city with lots of traffic and exhaust fumes, the filters will clog up faster than in a rural area with less particulate matter in the air. In general, it is recommended to change filters at least once a year. If air quality is poor, it is wise to do this after only six months. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, it may be necessary to change the filters after only two months.
How do I replace my MVHR filter?
It is quite easy to fit or replace a MVHR filter in your MVHR unit yourself. However, it is important to know in advance which type of filter is suitable for the MVHR unit you have. There are three different types of MVHR filters: filters with a wire frame, filters without a wire frame and panel filters. It is very important that you choose the right filter for the specific MVHR unit. Need help with this? Then click here for our MVHR filter selection guide. Furthermore, make sure that the MVHR unit is not left switched off unnecessarily, except when it comes to maintenance. If you worry about forgetting to change the MVHR filters, we offer a MVHR filter reminder service. After all, regularly replacing and cleaning your MVHR filters is important for air quality, as well as energy consumption. Want to know all about replacing your MVHR filter? How exactly does a filter box work?
When you combine an air filter box with a fan and connect it directly to a spiral duct or ventilation duct, it ensures that both incoming and outgoing air is filtered. This results in better overall air quality and a healthier indoor environment, as there will be fewer dust particles in the air. The removable filters of a filter box can be cleaned if necessary. You are also in the right place at Ventialtionland for loose filters to supplement or replace your current ones. A filter box is made of galvanised sendzimir steel and has a handy lid to allow easy access. Moreover, the connection has a rubber seal, so the box can be seamlessly connected to the spiral duct and no air is lost. The filter boxes on our website are available in different diameters (from 100mm to 400mm). Improve indoor climate quality by connecting a filter box to the ventilation duct!
The advantages of filters for ventilation at a glance
Better air quality as dust, pollen, mould spores, bacteria and other pollutants are filtered out of the air.
Higher energy efficiency, as the ventilation system requires less energy to move the same amount of air.
A longer life of the ventilation system, as contaminants are less likely to accumulate in the ventilation system.
Less (unpleasant) odours, and thus a more pleasant and fresher indoor climate.
Good health, with less risk of colds, flu and allergies thanks to cleaner air.
