How to ensure good ventilation in a childcare centre?
Clean air and sufficient oxygen are most important at day-care centres. Mechanical ventilation with a ventilation system or MVHR unit ensures a constant flow of fresh air. For extra ventilation, air can be ventilated naturally through open doors and windows or through ventilation grilles. An air cleaner can then filter bacteria, viruses, mould, pollen and (fine) dust from the air. The combination of ventilation and air purification ensures healthy air. A safe place for the children!
Child day-care ventilation requirements
VAccording to the BB 101 there should be adequate ventilation provided for everyone in the building. Mechanical systems must adhere to a daily average of 1.000 ppm CO2. Natural ventilation systems must not exceed a daily average of 1.500 ppm CO2. We recommend an air exchange rate of 40-50 m³/hr per room. We also recommend measuring the CO2 value in every room in the childcare centre and it should remain below 1,000 ppm.
Measuring air quality at childcare facilities
In order to provide insight into the air quality at day-care centres, a CO2 meter should be used. A CO2 meter measures the amount of carbon dioxide in the air expressed in PPM (parts per million). As soon as the air quality reaches a PPM of 1000, it is necessary to ventilate better. This can be done by opening doors and windows or by switching on an air cleaner. An air cleaner also removes the smallest air particles, the aerosols, from the air. However, an air cleaner alone is not sufficient and mechanical ventilation must be used continuously at a childcare centre.

At a day-care centre, mechanical ventilation is required in order to meet the ventilation requirement of 3.44 litres per second per person. Besides this, natural ventilation can provide for extra fresh air as desired.
