Ventilation against allergies and hay fever?
Hay fever and house dust mite allergy are common allergies. Ventilation is not only important for maintaining healthy air quality and good health, but it is also effective in reducing the symptoms associated with hypersensitivity to certain substances, such as allergies and hay fever. In this article, we explain why this is so!
Ventilate for clean indoor air
Whereas hypersensitivity can cause symptoms all year round, hay fever is tied to certain months of the year. In particular, the flowering period of trees, flowers and grasses, combined with heat and wind, cause symptoms in many people. Airborne pollen can of course be restricted indoors, but certainly not prevented without help. A useful solution to limiting allergens in the home is to monitor air quality. Ventilation of the home is very important here, as the air is full of pathogens, including allergens. Regularly exhausting air and supplying clean air promotes health.
Mechanical or natural ventilation in case of allergy
Ventilating an indoor space can be done mechanically or naturally. Natural ventilation by installing air vents to let air from outside into the house, or changing the air by opening windows, can actually cause health problems in an allergic person. After all, both the window and the ventilation grilles allow the pollen that causes hay fever to enter the room undisturbed. A ventilation grille is therefore especially useful in combination with mechanical ventilation.
If MEV or MVHR systems are chosen, they offer many advantages. For example, the entire quality of air in the entire house can be controlled from a single room. In addition, several systems are equipped with smart functions that control optimal supply and exhaust fully automatically, so that the whole family benefits from healthy air.
Ventilation prevents house dust mites
Insufficient ventilation or no ventilation at all gives the tiny spider mites, which are not visible to the naked eye but can trigger an allergic reaction through their droppings, a chance to multiply very quickly. To break the life cycle of these pests in the home and reduce nuisance, the house should be regularly ventilated. By optimally exhausting the air, the dried droppings of the mite are removed and the air in your home is replaced with clean air.
Extra clean air with air purifiers
Besides mechanical ventilation, an air purifier can also help relieve symptoms of allergies or hay fever. This is because air purifiers use filters to clean the air of (fine) dust and pollen. Air purifiers best suited for allergies have at least a HEPA filter and refresh the air in a room 3.5 times per hour. To relieve asthma symptoms, the air purifier should have a carbon filter in addition to a HEPA filter and change the air at least 5 times an hour. View our air purifiers with HEPA filter.
