Which health complaints do I get as a result of poor ventilation?
Posted on 3-11-2021 by Nienke Vinkenvleugel

The lack of fresh air in a room is very unhealthy. This leads, among other things, to physical complaints that become noticeable very quickly. In this blog, we will list the complaints that are caused by poor ventilation and give you tips on how to prevent them.

Complaints due to unhealthy air in the house

With bad ventilation there is too much CO2 and/or (too low) humidity. Do you notice that complaints arise after a long time in a (closed) space? Do the following questions ever occur to you?

  • What can you do best against headaches at work?
  • What to do against dry and sore eyes?
  • What can I do against a dull feeling?
  • What should I do if my child has concentration problems while studying?
  • Why do I get dry hands in the winter?
  • Why does my hair become static in the winter?
  • Why do I always get electric shocks when I touch something or someone?
  • Why do my lips tear?
  • What can you do about a dry throat?

Then chances are it's because of poor or absent ventilation. In this blog you can read exactly which CO2 level causes which complaints. Good ventilation is necessary for your health. You may not be able to see it, but you can notice it in the complaints above. You will see that good ventilation eases or even solves a lot of these complaints.

How can I ventilate well?

Do you want to be sure that the CO2 level is healthy in the rooms you are in? Then you should buy a CO2 meter. The CO2 monitor will warn you when it is time to let fresh air in. In addition to CO2, the EnviSense CO2 meter also measures the air humidity in a room. An ideal humidity level is between 40 and 60%. If it exceeds this level, it can cause mould in the house and health problems. Is the humidity in your home too low? Then use our humidifiers. Is it too high? Check out our ventilation systems or bathroom fans with a humidity sensor.

Apart from the complaints that poor ventilation causes, there are more reasons why good ventilation is important.

Ventilate against humidity and mould

In a poorly ventilated house moisture cannot get out easily. The humidity accumulates in the house by condensing against your walls, ceiling, furniture etc. and leads to (invisible) mould spots. Too high or too low humidity and mould are not only bad for your home, but also for your health. It can lead to breathing problems and allergies. This problem especially occurs in the colder months when we are at home a lot, with the windows closed and the heating on. Especially with autumn and winter approaching, it is important to get good ventilation right away. Prevent damage to your home and to your own health.

Prevent sick leave through ventilation

Poor ventilation causes health problems and therefore sick leave. A CO2 concentration higher than 1000 ppm increases sick leave by 10% to 20%. It is estimated that a poor indoor climate costs the average European half a year of his or her healthy life. This poor indoor climate is caused, among other things, by humidity and mould, furniture and textiles, electrical appliances, cleaning products and building materials. If you want to rid the indoor air of bacteria, micro-organisms, dust, pollen, etc., an air purifier is the solution for you!
Please note: this is not a substitute for good ventilation. An air purifier does not supply oxygen.

Tips to improve your ventilation

TIP 1: Make sure that enough fresh air can enter your house. This can be done by means of mechanical ventilation or a heat recovery system.
TIP 2: Measuring is knowledge! Measure the air quality with a CO2 meter.
TIP 3: Once you have purchased a ventilation system, you must ensure that it is well maintained. If you don't do this, it will again cause health complaints.
