The 5 best CO2 monitors

The 5 best CO2 monitors
Posted on 3-11-2021 by Nienke Vinkenvleugel

When you are in a room for a longer period of time, it is important to know whether the air quality is good. If this is not the case, you are at risk of suffering from various health complaints. Especially when there are several people in the house or office, CO2 levels can rise quickly. Now, not only the exposure to a high CO2 level is very harmful, also COVID can be transmitted more easily in a room with a high ppm value. A carbon dioxide monitor has therefore become indispensable. This device indicates when the CO2 level is too high in a room, and therefore when it is time to ventilate.

Which CO2 monitor should I choose?

When choosing a suitable, user-friendly CO2 monitor, there are a number of points that are important. Take note of things like the LED indicators (traffic light), measurement error, calibration possibility and data logging.

Note the calibration capability. As a CO2 sensor ages, "drift" can occur. This is a slight and constant change of the measurement results of the device under the same conditions, which makes the measurement no longer accurate. Various solutions are offered to make the calibration accurate again. Preference is given to ABC (self-calibrating function), to check annually whether the CO2 meter responds properly. This should be done with every CO2 meter, regardless of supplier. In any case, make sure you do not choose a sensor that has to be calibrated by the manufacturer or laboratory. This is very expensive and probably not done often enough.

It's best to have a CO2 sensor with a measuring range up to at least 5,000 ppm.

Every CO2 monitor has a measurement error. It is important that this measurement error is not too large. A measuring error of max. 10% of a measurement up to 2,000 ppm or 100 ppm up to a value of 5,000 ppm is acceptable.

Choose a carbon dioxide tester that displays the measured values on a screen or with a traffic light. That way it is always clear to people in a room what the current CO2 level is.

A CO2 monitor with colour indicator or alarm (also called traffic light function or LED indicator) ensures that people in a room immediately know when it is time to ventilate more.

Data logging is mandatory for primary schools and can be useful for anyone. It allows you to evaluate changes in CO2 levels during the day and the effect of, for example, opening windows and doors.

The data from the EnviSense CO2 monitor with data logger is stored only on the memory card of your own device and can be viewed in Excel or in the free digital dashboard, if desired. This dashboard can be accessed with any device and on any Internet browser. The data cannot be viewed by others in any way whatsoever, unless you forward it yourself. This is not the case with all CO2 monitors, it is often the case that the dashboard has a subscription that costs money or works via a paid app.
