Air purifier selection guide

Air purifier selection guide
Posted on 14-4-2021 by Nienke Vinkenvleugel

Nowadays, a lot of people spend a lot more time indoors than before. To be sure of clean air, it is important to ventilate well and to install an air purifier. After all, the air inside is often more polluted than the air outside. An open window or extra ventilation provides fresh air. An air purifier then filters small particles from the air, such as dust, pollen, smoke and fine dust, which can also enter the room with an open window. But which air purifier is the best choice for you? Read about it here in the air purifier selection guide.

What is an air purifier?

An air purifier is a device that you can place in any room and that helps if you suffer from, for example, allergies, asthma, smoke or (fine) dust. But what does an air purifier actually do?

An air purifier cleans the air of minuscule particles that are annoying and/or harmful to the airways. This can be done using various techniques; the air purifiers in our range work with ionisation or bipolar ionisation and with various filters. Ionisation is also a proven technique against corona. However, this does not give a 100% guarantee that you will not get corona, as this virus can also be found on the hands or face, for example.

Which air purifier should I choose?

Which air purifier is the best choice for you depends on various factors. We have listed the most important factors for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ionisation and bipolar ionisation?
You can read the difference between the air cleaners in our range with ionisation and bi-polar ionisation in our blog 'Ionisation and bipolar ionisation, how it works'.

Does an air cleaner work against corona?
Ionisation is a proven technique against corona, however it is not a 100% guarantee that you will not get corona. You can still contract corona at other locations or carry it with you on your hands or face, for example. Others can also infect you. You should therefore always observe the measures (washing hands, keeping a distance, etc.).

Can an air purifier be harmful?
An air purifier with an ioniser emits a small amount of ozone. However, this is so little that it is not harmful to your health. The ozone value of Faton air purifiers is 0.01 ppm. Extra ventilation is therefore not necessary. The Periso air purifiers do not emit any ozone.

Air purifier or window open?
Opening a window once in a while is extremely important for fresh air. But this is not enough; always keep the ventilation grids open and the mechanical ventilation system on. This ensures that the CO2 level inside remains low and the oxygen level is maintained. The air purifier then filters out dust, dust mites, pollen and fine dust, but also unpleasant odours and cigarette smoke/air, which can come in with an open window. The HEPA filter removes harmful particles from the air that are much smaller. In addition, the ionisation technique ensures that bacteria and viruses, among others, are rendered inactive and heavy, so that you no longer breathe them in.

Does an air purifier help with allergies?
People with allergies clearly notice a difference with an air purifier. They sleep better when an air purifier is in the bedroom and feel more comfortable in the living room. If, for instance, you suffer from hay fever, it is very nice if you are not bothered by this at home and feel comfortable in your own home. An air purifier also filters smoke odours and other unpleasant smells and dust from the air, for example from the neighbours' wood-burning stove or pets (e.g. cat, dog or parrot).

Extra tip
For optimal performance of the air purifier: keep the air purifier and the filters clean. The filters can best be vacuumed once with a hoover at the lowest setting. Check them at least every six months and replace them if necessary.
